A Planetary Transmission provides the required torque and speed control to move and operate the machine effectively in rough terrains. The transmission consists of a set of interconnected planetary gears. This arrangement includes a sun gear, planet gears, a planet carrier, and a ring gear. The gears work together to achieve various speed and torque outputs. The power input to the planetary transmission comes from the engine. By varying the rotation of the input the transmission helps achieve different output speeds.

Applications:
A Planetary Transmission is used in a Load Haul Dump to allow for directional reversal, providing both forward and reverse movement capabilities. This is achieved by changing the rotational direction of the planet carrier relative to the sun gear and the ring gear, which in turn closes the direction of movement of the wheels.
