It creates a barrier between the piston and cylinder wall, ensuring that the fluid remains contained within the cylinder. It helps to reduce friction between the piston and cylinder wall, allowing for smooth movement of the piston within the cylinder. It is made up of strong and durable material, such as rubber, to ensure strength and withstand high operating conditions.
