An Alternator Belt Tensioner is a device that maintains constant tension on a serpentine belt in an engine. It consists of a pulley mounted on a spring-loaded arm. The arm exerts a consistent force on the belt, compensating for any slack that may develop. The tensioner may also incorporate a damping mechanism to absorb vibrations and ensure smoother operation.
Attributes:
• Nominal torque at 46 ±4.6 Nm at 17° from free arm position
• Damping ratio = 20 % to 60%
• Minimum arm travel = 45°
• Designed to accommodate flat parallel V-shaped belts
• Spring torque slope is 0.4 Nm/Degree
Applications:
An Alternator Belt Tensioner is mounted to the engine front housing which is to compensate for the natural stretching and wearing of alternator belts over a period of time. As belts age and undergo thermal expansion and contraction, their tension can decrease, leading to reduced performance of the alternator they are driving.
